Many employees learned of their stores closing when they showed up to work on Thursday, according to local media reports.
In a press release issued Thursday evening, Walmart, which owns Sam's Club, said 12 of the 63 locations will be converted into fulfillment centers. In addition to changing its benefit for mothers, the company will begin offering full-time hourly and salaried associates six weeks of paid parental leave, and associates who adopt a child will receive $5,000 in financial assistance.
"After a thorough review, it became clear we had built clubs in some locations that impacted other clubs, and where population had not grown as anticipated", Furner said in the email.
Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin also thanked Walmart for raising wages and pointed to the move as evidence that the new Republican tax law is good for American workers. Employees were offered severance based on how long they had been employed at the store, or the opportunity to transfer to a nearby location, Corona said.
The year that just ended was a record-setting one for closings, and 2018 doesn't seem to be any slower.
Sam's Club, which is located in Dawn Drive in Lumberton, will close on Jan. 26. "So, the fact that we are increasing the pay by two dollars is phenominal". The store has 110 employees.
With the closings also came concerns about prescriptions at Sam's Club pharmacies.
Each of these locations sent a majority of the employees home today with no notice and closed the store for the day, while other employees remained in meetings.
McBride said the chamber supported the tax reform initiative and he is optimistic that businesses will continue to make positive changes like this.
"We've received a commitment from Walmart that they will work aggressively to market the property to other businesses". Meaning, without confirmation of some official sort, I am always reluctant to pull that trigger of immediately releasing the news.
Sixty-three stores in total will be closing, but customer traffic and sales comparisons - the typical reasons why companies scale back store count - can't entirely explain why Walmart has done this.
