To make matters worse, the battery exploded in a Zurich Apple Store and caused the entire outlet to be evacuated.
The incident prompted the evacuation of around 50 customers and staff from the shop. It seems a store assistant was removing the battery from an iPhone 6S Plus when it overheated and burnt his hand. Police, fire services, and an ambulance were called in to investigate and tend to victims.
"The staff responded well and correctly", police said. Six other people received medical care on site - presumably for smoke inhalation - but none required hospital treatment.
The battery and device are now being examined by the Zurich Forensic Institute to determine the cause of the problem. "It sprinkled quartz sand over the overheated battery so that the smoke could be contained and sucked out after switching on the ventilation", Reuters cited Switzerland local police statement.
The news comes days after Apple confessed to have deliberately throttled CPU performance in older iPhones to extend battery life.
