The space rock - which will be travelling at 21,363 mph when it makes its closest approach to earth at 4.56pm on December 28 - measures between seven and 15 metres (22.6 to 49 feet) in diameter.

"This is the most extreme orbit I have ever seen", Davide Farnocchia, a scientist with the NASA Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) was quoted as saying in the release.

The latest approach is the closest the asteroid has been to Earth since December 16, 1974, when it was around 5 million miles away - although we were blissfully unaware at the time.

2017 YZ4 is from the Apollo group of asteroids, a group of near Earth asteroids that regularly cross the planet.

"This is the first known asteroid to fly by Earth within one lunar distance since two such asteroids flew past us 35 minutes apart on 21 November, and the 52nd this year", A Nasa spokesman told the Express. As this asteroid was identified on Christmas day and will going to give us a much closer visit. That depicts that yes we have to be prepared for these asteroids and should be able to identify them in the far space.

"As of December 24, there are 17,495 known near-Earth objects (NEOs) around our planet.17, 389 are asteroids".

"These new observations of Phaethon show it may be similar in shape to asteroid Bennu, the target of NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, but more than 1,000 Bennus could fit inside of Phaethon", Patrick Taylor a scientist at Arecibo Observatory, said in the NASA statement. The moon, by the way, (384,400 kilometers) from Earth.

Conspiracy theorists claim the Earth is due a direct hit with an asteroid.

The newly discovered object is only slightly smaller than the object that entered the Earth's atmosphere in 2013 and exploded in the skies over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk, injuring hundreds of people.

According to observations, the Phaeton is approaching the Sun at a distance of 20 million kilometers.

During a recent pass of another asteroid, Nasa used its international network of observatories to recover, track and characterise asteroid 2012 TC4. 3200 Phaethon actually crosses the orbits of Mercury, Venus and Mars, as well as Earth, making it especially menacing.

NASA made a big revelation that a big asteroid passed by earth, earlier this moth a massive asteroid named 3200 Phaethon passed by our planet.
