The Blues finished behind Serie A club AS Roma to throw up the possibility of Chelsea facing La Liga leaders Barcelona or Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain in the next round.
Chelsea blew the opportunity to finish top of their group with a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night at Stamford Bridge, with the draw allowing Roma to leapfrog them to finish as Group C winners.
If a move away wasn't guaranteed already, it most certainly is, and could even occur next month.
So why are Chelsea destined to play Barcelona?
Anything else you need to know?
"We tried to play our game". We'll see what happens.
With European heavyweights like Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Juventus in pot two, there are guaranteed to be some blockbuster clashes in the second round.
Not that PSG was the only team scoring for fun. "But we are a team, the manager makes the best decisions for the team, and it was important we won".
Special mentions: There's been unusually little fanfare around them this season, but Barcelona have also been brilliant.
Cesar Azpilicueta has pledged to try and beat his mark of starting 74 consecutive matches in the Premier League for Chelsea, though he accepted that Antonio Conte may choose to rest him again over a busy festive fixture schedule.
And Cahill rued missed opportunities to beat Atletico, with goalkeeper Jan Oblak making a number of key saves for the visitors, who fell into the Europa League.
The only Turkish team to have advanced to the Last 16 as group leader.
Who will be in the hat?
The Belgians, who had enjoyed the better of the first half, won it 17 minutes into the second half when defender Jozo Simunovic deflected Pieter Gerkens' header into his own net. Los Rojiblancos thought through the game well until Sául scored the opening goal, but after that, Chelsea came out on top.
