The Bayern Munich attacker scored both goals for the Oranje as he captained his side to a 2-0 victory over Sweden in the final matchday of UEFA World Cup qualification.
And Arjen Robben will no longer wear the orange his country sports, announcing his retirement from international competition after the game. A result that was not enough to keep Netherlands slim hopes of reaching the World Cup alive.
Arjen Robben took the resulting spot kick and almost messed up the Panenka finish as the ball dribbled over the line past the outstrecthed boot of goalkeeper Robin Olsen.
Almost immediately after full time, reports began to emerge that the Oranje would suffer a second blow of the night with the news that Robben was set to step back from international football.
Netherlands failed to reach the 2018 World Cup finals despite a 2-0 win over Sweden. He participated in three European Championships (2004, 2008, 2012) and three World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014).
The Dutch also progressed to the last four at the 2014 finals before losing to Argentina on penalties. The Netherlands failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 2002.
Robben finishes his international career having averaged a goal or assist every 112 minutes for the Netherlands, adding 29 assists to his 37 goals.
Victor Lindelof gave away a penalty in Sweden's defeat to Netherlands.
Dick Advocaat's men went into the match knowing they needed to score at least seven goals and win by six to secure a top-two spot, and although Robben's fine performance saw them claim a comfortable win, they were far too profligate to get near their target.
