Tensions over North Korea's weapons programme have soared in recent months with Pyongyang launching a flurry of missiles and conducting its sixth and most powerful nuclear test in defiance of multiple sets of UN sanctions.

Robert Gates warns that the inflammatory statements could lead to military conflictUS President Donald Trump's provocative tweets about North Korea are drawing an outpouring of concern. Ri added that North Korea's "army and people are persistently demanding to settle the final score with the Americans with a fiery hail, not words".

Trump lambasted "little rocket man" Kim Jong Un for going on a "suicide mission for himself and his regime" in the speech last month.

On Monday, Trump's Defense Secretary James Mattis said at the annual meeting of the Association of the United States Army that the U.S. Army should "be ready" for a potential war with North Korea. But Kim, the third generation of his family to rule, is officially revered in the North, and any suggestion of removing him from power is taken extremely seriously in Pyongyang.

Kang was appointed by President Moon Jae-in after he took office in May, partly on the promise of improving relations between the Koreas. "This positive process is worth a try", the paper said in an editorial late on Tuesday. However, the new commentary does not talk about attacking the United States, but instead on building up its own defenses.

"While I would not characterize them as the best in the world, they are among the best in the world and the best organized", Army Gen. Vincent Brooks, commander of U.S. Forces Korea, told the Senate last year.

Speaking to Russia's state-run TASS news agency on Wednesday, North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho said his country's nuclear program guaranteed peace and safety in the region and would not be a matter of discussion.

North Korea has yet to comment on either the bombing drills or the hacking claims.
