"In regards to the election of the French Guiana national team to field player Florent Malouda in this evening's Gold Cup match against the Honduras national team, and in line with the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2017 regulations which are governed by FIFA regulations pertaining to player eligibility, the matter has been referred to the CONCACAF Gold Cup Disciplinary Committee", a CONCACAF statement read.
Malouda, who made 80 international appearances for France, played for the country of his birth in a 0-0 draw with Honduras on Tuesday.
"It was great. It was very emotional for me, I've waited a long time for the approval to be able to play", Malouda said.
The former Chelsea and Olympique Lyon player, who did not play in last year's qualifying matches for the Gold Cup, was born in French Guiana and currently plays his club football with Delhi Dynamos in India.
French Guiana is classified as an overseas region and department of France, and therefore is not a FIFA member and is ineligible to qualify for the World Cup. But looking adequate, even with a B team, won't be enough to inspire confidence in fans hoping for another knockout round run at the 2018 World Cup.
As a result Malouda was allowed to play for French Guiana in the 2017 Caribbean Cup, featuring twice as they finished third in Martinique in June. However, he was not selected for their opening Gold Cup match against Canada, which they lost 4-2.
Making their debut in the tournament were French Guiana. The game should be an exciting clash between the two top teams in Group A.
Honduras and French Guiana are in Group A alongside Costa Rica and Canada. More precisely, he is not eligible to play.
Now I have to recover. "[Wednesday] we'll think about that game, but I'm expecting to play", Malouda said.
